On July 23, right after the heavy rainfall all over Korea, about 300 members of Gyeongnam Western Association of the Church of God held a cleanup activity at Samho Stream in Masan city. It had been forecasted that it would rain on that day too, but it was just a best day for a cleanup activity because it didnt rain, and only the clouds covered the sun.
Before the cleanup began at 11a.m., Pastor Du-Seok Kim encouraged the volunteers, saying, Streams have been very polluted because of the recent heavy rain. Lets do our best to clean Samho Stream so that the citizens can enjoy the stream. Then they headed for their allotted areas with trash pokers and tongs, sacks and gloves.
There were many household wastes and garbage here and there, which were drifted down into the stream because of the heavy rain. It was hard to collect the wastes and garbage because of the fast current, but the male volunteers made a way in the stream and the rest of the volunteers followed them and cleaned the rubbish. The activity lasted for about three hours, and by the time it ended, there were many sacks full of the rubbish. At about 2p.m., the members moved to the City Hall area and cleaned the streets before going home.
A member who attended this activity make a broad smile and said, Now, this cleanup activity made me more interested in my city. Im happy to see the clean stream. A citizen who saw the volunteers cleaning said, I only thought the stream was dirty, but I have never thought about cleaning it. I want to participate in the cleanup activity as well. I believe this would be good education for my children. The volunteers wished Samho Stream to be a nice resting area for the citizens of Masan city, and said that they would be willing to help their neighbors.
