Most people expect to see a miracle before they believe in Christ. Of course, God is almighty and able to perform all kinds of miracles.

Then, what is the miracle of Christ? People call it a miracle to make the lame walk and the blind see. However, such a miracle is not so wondrous when we consider the countless great miracles which God has already performed.

If we look at things with an eye of faith, we can see numerous miracles. Among all the miracles performed by God, the greatest miracle is that He has saved our souls, doomed to die on account of sin, through the words of eternal life. That is the miracle of the new covenant.

Through the works of Jesus, let’s see who can experience God’s miracles, so that we may take hold of the greatest miracle of God.

Characteristics of those who experienced miracles

Mt 9:1-8 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” . . . “Get up, take your mat and go home.” And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.

Mt 9:18-22 . . . Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that moment.

Mt 9:27-30 As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed him, calling out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” When he had gone in-doors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied. Then he touched their eyes and said, “According to your faith will it be done to you”; and their sight was restored . . .

Whenever Jesus demonstrated His miraculous powers, there was an essential condition for them. That was faith. When Jesus said to the two blind men, “According to your faith will it be done to you,” would their sight have been restored if they had no faith? Jesus’ word, “According to your faith will it be done to you,” and their faith brought about a miracle.

When a paralytic was brought to Jesus, He saw his faith and healed him. And a bleeding woman could experience a miracle because she believed in Jesus’ power to heal her. The Bible explains that miracles occur only to those who have faith.

In the time of Elisha there were many lepers in Israel, yet none of them were cleansed; only Naaman the Syrian came to Elisha and experienced the miracle of healing. And there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, but only the widow of Zarephath experienced the miracle of God; she fed Elijah, and God made the flour bin to never run out (Lk 4:25-27). All this resulted from their faith; they rightly recognized the prophet of God and received him.

But considering God’s miraculous power, such miracles are not so great. When we look at things with an eye of faith―the spiritual eye, we can witness countless miracles that God has performed.

Miracles beheld with the eye of faith

Whatever God’s hands are working on, wherever His word is preached, miracles do happen. Truth exists among things that seem ordinary, and such is the case for miracles.

God has displayed numerous miracles on earth, yet most people regard them simply as natural events. However, if we look at our surroundings with a thorough understanding of them, we can know that everything in the world, made by God, is a miracle.

Isn’t the earth itself a miracle? When we plant a seed in the earth and water it, a bud sprouts and grows to bloom and fruit. How can the small seed itself become a big tree? People regard it as a marvelous thing that magicians have something up their sleeve, but that’s just a trick. In fact, every activity in nature is really a great miracle.

Why don’t we feel it when the earth moves at such a high rate of speed? That’s a miracle. If we see a man walking on walls or hanging upside down from the ceiling, we will marvel at it. So do we every day: Both we and the people on the opposite side of the earth from us stand upright. Looking at the earth from space, however, we or they stand upside down; compared to them, we are hanging upside down.

Such miracles occur around us all the time. However, people think of a miracle as something that happens out of the ordinary. About 2,000 years ago, when the Jews looked for a miraculous sign, Jesus said to them, “No sign will be given except the sign of the prophet Jonah.”

There will be no sign except the sign of Jonah

Mt 12:38-40 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

As the prophet Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, so Jesus was in the tomb three days and three nights. After that, He was resurrected, overcoming the power of death, so that we might have the hope of living eternally.

There is no greater miracle than raising the dead. Providing eternal life, not a limited life which perishes after some decades, is the greatest miracle. Jesus said that the only miracle He would give was the miracle of Jonah―the miracle of destroying death and giving eternal life.

God can perform the miracle of dividing the sea simply by His word; He can move a huge mountain and make the heavens fall. However, if God works such miracles, what is that to us?

God, who loves our souls, has given eternal life to us dying because of sin that leads to death, through the words of the new covenant. When we see this miracle of giving eternal life through the words, we can find our God.

Faith that depends on the miracle of eternal life

When Jesus fed 5,000 people with five barley loaves and still there were twelve baskets full of broken pieces left over, they were all surprised and wondered over it. They even intended to make Jesus king. However, Jesus didn’t place that kind of thing under the category of miracles.

What does God consider the greatest miracle? When He brought ten plagues upon Egypt, He turned the waters into blood, filled the whole land with frogs and caused a thick darkness to cover the land for three days. God showed such wondrous miracles continuously. Pharaoh, who had no faith in God, was surprised at first but he soon forgot God’s power. When God turned their waters into blood, the magicians of Egypt also did the same thing by their secret arts, and Pharaoh’s heart became even harder.

It is only God who can grant us eternal life. Since God alone can give us eternal life, Jesus testified about Himself through this.

Jn 6:27 “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Jesus said that He alone could give food enduring to eternal life. Those who were focused only on perishable food followed Jesus when He miraculously fed 5,000 people with five barley loaves and two fish; but when He said some things about eternal life, they didn’t understand and turned back and no longer followed Him. They had no eyes of faith to see the real miracle.

Jn 6:65-69 . . . From that time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

The disciples saw the real miracle. The five thousand people just focused on the temporary satisfaction of their physical hunger when Jesus fed them with bread and fish, but the disciples saw a spiritual significance in the miracle, that they continued to follow the Christ.

The magicians could turn sticks into snakes or waters into blood, but none of them could perform the miracle of giving eternal life with the words. Since the beginning nobody has been able to imitate the miracle of eternal life. Only God can perform such a miracle. So Peter followed Christ, saying, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

God performs the miracle of eternal life

Like Peter who recognized the true miracle of Christ and followed Him, we should see the miracle which God alone can perform and follow the Spirit and the Bride. The prophet Isaiah prophesied that we would recognize God through the miracle He performed in Zion.

Isa 25:6-9 On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine―the best of meats and the finest of wines. On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the sheet that covers all nations; he will swallow up death forever . . . In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is the LORD, we trusted him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

God has worked the miracle of destroying death forever with refined, aged wine. Through such a miracle, we are to recognize our God.

Those who have the eyes of faith recognize the miracle of God and gladly receive Him as Savior. But most people do not perceive the greatest miracle and fail to rightly recognize Christ.

Who on earth can make us eternal beings with bread and wine? Only God can do. Though God shows such wondrous miracles, those who do not believe and understand come to depart from Christ and fall away from salvation.

God’s miracle occurs wherever His word is preached

We should realize that we now live with numerous miracles wrought by God. To see all the miracles, we are required to have faith.

What changes are made after the observance of God’s words in the world of faith? Let’s think of a change to occur when we obey the word, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” If we have faith and obey the word, we will experience the miracles of eternal happiness, peace and rest in heaven.

Let’s consider a change after obeying the word, “Eat the Passover bread and drink the wine.” We will see the miracle of eternal life. And let’s imagine the miracle of God we will experience when we obey the word, “Lead many to righteousness.” We shall “shine like the stars of heaven for ever and ever.”

God is the Maker of miracles. His greatest miracle is the Passover miracle; God has given us eternal life through the Passover bread and wine; He remains in us, and we in Him. These are all miracles of God. We should not disregard them, thinking they are just profound words in the Bible.

Though most people in the world do not see the miracle of God in itself, we should rightly recognize it. Like Peter, let us see the true miracle through the eyes of faith and follow the Spirit and the Bride wherever They lead us, as children of God—heirs of eternal life.

Seeing with spiritual eyes, we have received the greatest miracle of all. Our family members of Zion! Let us proclaim God’s glory even to the ends of the earth and faithfully perform our spiritual mission as couriers, by inviting many into this wondrous miracle.
