When we wake up in the morning, we hear a lot of news about accidents and disasters. Among all kinds of disasters, what would be the greatest disaster? The Passover is a medication which God has prescribed for us to be saved from a certain disaster. What kind of disaster do you think it is?

Disasters occurring in the world do not continue beyond the human life span, no matter how long they last. In the Bible, however, there is an everlasting disaster, where people cannot even die though they want to because of extreme pain. God has given us the New Covenant Passover, in which we can find God’s earnest will to save us from such a horrible disaster.

The disaster that lasts forever

There are many people in the world who are suffering from unexpected accidents or natural disasters. There are also people who are suffering from diseases or going through financial difficulties. While living in this world, everyone can encounter disasters in various forms, great or small.

In actuality, however, God’s ultimate purpose for establishing the truth of the Passover is to save us from the greatest disaster that brings forth eternal torment. First of all, let us find out what the greatest disaster in the Bible is.

Rev 19:20–21 But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. The rest of them were killed with the sword that came out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

Rev 20:10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

The fiery lake of burning sulfur mentioned in Revelation simply refers to hell. The Bible shows that there is hell where the unsaved will be tormented for ever and ever, whereas there is the kingdom of heaven where the souls of the saved will enjoy happiness and comfort forever.

We must avoid this disaster by all means. When we suffer a disaster in this world, though temporarily, it is very painful for us. God protects us from such disasters, but the most important thing for us to do is to be saved from the disaster that incurs everlasting torment. Since God did not want His children to suffer the eternal disaster of hell, He came to this earth in the flesh.

Jesus’ teaching on hell

When Jesus preached the good news of the kingdom of heaven to people 2,000 years ago, He explained to them the principles of the spiritual world. He taught us that we must not go to hell. This teaching of Christ forms an important part of His entire teaching.

Mt 5:29–30 “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

Mt 18:7–9 “. . . If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.”

Hell is a place of torment that lasts forever and ever; every experience in hell is a terrible disaster itself. God has repeatedly and earnestly asked us to avoid the disaster of hell by any means necessary.

Unless we follow the path which God leads us on, we cannot escape the eternal fire of hell. This is why Jesus rebuked the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who pretended outwardly to believe in God, calling Him, “Lord, Lord,” but their hearts were far from Him.

Mt 23:15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.”

Mt 23:10–13 “Nor are you to be called ‘teacher,’ for you have one Teacher, the Christ . . . Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.”

The religious leaders of that time did not follow the law of God but practiced lawlessness. By doing that, they shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces; they themselves did not enter, nor would they let those enter who were trying to. When they won a single convert, they made him twice as much a son of hell as they were. Jesus sternly rebuked them. He called them false prophets, and warned His disciples that if they followed them, they would be destroyed and wouldn’t be able to escape being condemned to hell (Mt 7:15–23; 23:33).

This is also why we must find the church that follows the truth, among so many churches today, by examining the Bible. God has saved us from the chains of sin and death and from the disaster of hell, by sacrificing His holy body. We must not become enslaved in sin again by committing lawlessness. Hell is the destination of all those who do not follow the truth, where they will be tormented forever and ever. Who can endure this never-ending disaster?

The New Covenant Passover, the way to escape the disaster of hell

So Jesus taught us that we must not go to hell even if we lose a part of our body. To save us from the disaster of hell, He established the truth—that is the New Covenant Passover.

Lk 22:7–15 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” . . . They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”

Why do you think Jesus desired so eagerly to eat the Passover? It was because He wanted to seek and to save the lost (Lk 19:10). The Bible describes suffering the eternal disaster of hell as destruction and being rescued from it as salvation. To save us from such a horrible disaster—eternal torment in hell, Jesus came to this earth and desired so eagerly to celebrate the Passover.

Lk 22:19–20 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

Jesus let His disciples eat bread and drink wine as symbols of His holy body and blood, and called it the “new covenant.” Here, we need to think about why Jesus established the new covenant on the Passover. The word “Passover” means to “skip over” or “pass over.” What passes over? That is a disaster.

Ex 12:11–14 “. . . it is the LORD’s Passover. On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt. This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the LORD—a lasting ordinance.”

The Passover ceremony dates back to the Old Testament Times, about 3,500 years ago. At the time of the Exodus, God told the Israelites to slaughter a lamb for each family and put the blood of the lamb on the sides and tops of the doorframes of their houses. Then He promised to protect them by letting the destroying angels pass over their houses when they saw the blood.

The Passover has such a symbolic meaning for us: Disasters pass over. The greatest disaster is neither the ten plagues in Egypt nor the seven last plagues. That is the disaster of hell. The Passover bread and wine is not simply bread and wine, but it has God’s promise to save us from the disaster of hell.

That is why Jesus desired so eagerly to celebrate the Passover with His disciples before He suffered. At that time, Jesus already knew that the next day, He would be crucified and suffer great pain, being insulted and mocked in front of so many people. Thinking of His upcoming suffering, He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane; when He prayed, His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground (Lk 22:39–44). We can imagine how anguished and distressed He was at that time. He endured such horrible pain to save us from hell and to open the way of life for us. So, the value of the Passover is beyond measure.

Mt 26:17–19, 26–28 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ ” So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover . . . While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus gave the meaning of the forgiveness of sins to the Passover, the way to escape disasters. Since our sins are forgiven, we are now able to escape the disaster of hell and go back to the kingdom of God. To save us from eternal punishment in hell, God came to this earth and established the New Covenant Passover, willingly suffering and sacrificing in all kinds of ways. How can we fully express in words the greatness of God’s love and grace?

The new covenant, the promise of eternal inheritance in heaven

The Passover, which we celebrate now, is not a mere ceremony that saves our physical lives and rescues us from disasters on the earth. The Passover is the truth of truths, which God established through His precious blood to redeem us from the greatest disaster—the disaster of hell.

The prophet Jeremiah prophesied that God would establish the new covenant to forgive the sins of His people.

Jer 31:31–34 “The time is coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah . . . This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the L ORD . “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

As prophesied, Jesus established the new covenant on the evening of the Passover. He had eagerly wanted and waited to accomplish this—to proclaim the new covenant. Without the new covenant which God established through His flesh and blood, God’s children would never be free from the disaster of hell.

In order to save us from such a great disaster, Christ offered Himself up as a sacrifice, and He gave us the promise of the eternal inheritance. He promised to lead us to the kingdom of heaven, where there will be no more death or mourning but an endless overflow of peace and the blessings of eternal life. By this amazing grace of God, we are now looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth (Rev 21:1–4; 2 Pe 3:13).

Heb 9:15–18 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood.

To give us the promised eternal inheritance, God Himself came to this earth in the flesh and established the new covenant. Satan tries to lead even one more soul to hell. So, he has been working so hard to destroy the truth of the new covenant. Whereas Satan has been attempting to abolish the Passover of the new covenant, God has been trying to preserve it to give it to His children. This great spiritual war has been continuing for thousands of years. In this spiritual warfare, God provides us with guidance and direction; He has come to this earth again and has restored the truth in this age.

Heb 9:28 . . . so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

The Bible says that Christ will come a second time, as the Spirit and the Bride (Rev 22:17). The Spirit and the Bride are now calling all human beings to come and receive the water of life, telling them not to go to the places where they will suffer disasters.

We must come to the Spirit and the Bride who give us the water of life. With sin, we cannot gain life, and unless we have the forgiveness of sins, we will never be free from the disaster of hell. Only those who come to the Spirit and the Bride can receive the forgiveness of sins and enjoy eternal life and all other blessings.

There are still many people in the world who have not heard the voice of the Spirit and the Bride and are wandering around aimlessly and running towards death unknowingly. Since God has made us competent as ministers of the new covenant (2 Co 3:6), let us work even harder to lead those people on the right path to salvation by preaching our God to the whole world—the Spirit and the Bride who have saved us from the eternal disaster through the truth of the new covenant.
